FC Cincinnati 2/Matchup Notes
The matchup - Sunday’s matchup marks the third and final meeting of the season between FC Cincinnati 2 and Columbus Crew 2. The Orange and Blue secured a 2-1 home victory in the previous meeting between the two sides with Leo Orejarena and Stefan Chirila finding the back of the net.
With a win Sunday night, FCC 2 can take the season series against Crew 2 for the second time in three years. The Orange and Blue won the series in 2024 with two wins in three matches against their Ohio based rival, and split results in two matches in 2025.
Debut for Dale – FC Cincinnati Academy goalkeeper Connor Dale was called up to the FCC 2 roster last weekend and made his MLS NEXT Pro debut against New England Revolution II. Dale kept the visitors off the board on a number of occasions throughout the match, and made a total of five saves in the game.
Dale’s debut continues a long list of academy players to make their MLS NEXT Pro debuts this season. In total, eight academy players have earned minutes for the first time this year at the MLS NEXT Pro level.
Welcome back, Kristian – First team forward Kristian Fletcher played his first competitive minutes in over a year when he started for FCC 2 against New England. Fletcher, who has been working his way back from injury, played 45 minutes in his return to competitive action.
Home cooking – FCC 2 continue to work through a busy home summer schedule with Sunday’s game against Columbus. The Orange and Blue host five of their next seven matches at home which will take the season through July. FCC 2 have found relative success at home this year, winning three of six at NKU Soccer Stadium.
Scouting Columbus Crew 2
Record: 7-4-3 (26 points)
Standings: 2nd, Eastern Conference
Last Three: 2-1 win, vs. CT United FC | 3-2 win, at New York City FC II | 2-2 draw – shootout loss – vs. Toronto FC II
Head Coach: Federico Higuaín
Leading Scorer: 8 – Zach Zengue
Coming off a 2-1 win against CT United FC, Columbus Crew 2 will look to build on back-to-back wins when they face FC Cincinnati 2 on Sunday. Crew 2 have been one of the best teams in the league and sit second in the Eastern Conference standings. Crew 2 trail first place Crown Legacy FC by four points heading into the weekend.
Not much has changed for Crew 2 since the prior two meetings between Cincinnati and Columbus. Zach Zengue continues to lead the charge for Crew 2 with eight goals on the year. The midfielder is just one goal back of Atlanta United 2’s Arif Kovac for a share of the Golden Boot Race lead.
Forward Kevin Gbamblé has scored in three consecutive matches for the Crew and now has six goals on the year. Gbamblé has also registered five assists on the year, good for a team high, and is on pace for his best season for Crew 2 after scoring six goals and tallying three assists in 2025.
If there is a flaw to be found with this Crew 2 side, it is their performances away from home. While unbeaten at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field, Columbus have won just twice on the road over seven matches which includes a loss to the Orange and Blue back in May.
