New England Revolution (5-1-2, 17 pts.) capitalized off a free kick and were able to break the deadlock in the 70th minute. New England’s Carles Gil swung in a cross, and Adam Buksa connected with a header to give the away team the lead. FC Cincinnati (1-4-1, 4 pts.) pushed forward and had various opportunities to find the back of the net.
Brenner ripped a shot from outside the penalty box, but the ball grazed over the crossbar. The most notable chance for the Orange and Blue came in the 82nd minute. Alvaro Barreal found Brandon Vazquez, whose right footed shot forced New England’s Matt Turner to make a save.
FC Cincinnati is heading into a break and will not return to action until Saturday, June 19 when the club hosts Colorado Rapids at TQL Stadium. “You can still see that we are fighting very hard in the second half. We changed the formation a little bit to hopefully go a little bit more forward, even though we had very good opportunities in the first half. We conceded a goal from a set piece again, which is disappointing of course. Then after we needed to come back into the game, you can see that we got some very clear opportunities to equalize as well. Unfortunately, we couldn’t pull the trigger.”
On the team’s fight in the match
“You need to keep on fighting in the situation we’re in. A positive thing is we still get opportunities against these teams as well. The only thing is, can you score yourself to at least get a point out of it? When that doesn’t happen, it’s disappointing.”
On what he wants to see from the team on the break
“We’re working in these periods as well. We’re working on everything. That’s normal, because we know there’s still a lot of room for improvement and we still need to improve a lot. There’s going to be work to be done, and even when you win it’s the same situation.”

“Yeah, I mean we have quality. We have very good players. I think we have a lot of potential. I think there are fine margins you can say, and you know the (New England) Revs maybe they spend a little more time with each other and last years’ experience. With this team coming together and new guys coming in; so, I think it’s going to take a little bit of time. Essentially, I think we’re heading in the right direction but the results. You know, it was a great win last week, but we have to make our home field advantage and we have to get results at home and that’s a given. That’s why we were disappointed. Everybody was disappointed today. We had chances, but we are going in the right direction. It's just going to take time. It’s fine margins.
On his opportunity to score in the final minutes of the game
“I just wanted to get the ball in the net. It was a great ball. Obviously, it was a bit high, and I tried to get over it. It would’ve been a great opportunity if I put it in the back of the net at the last minute, tying goal obviously, but it didn’t turn out the way I wanted to. I wish I could’ve gotten a little bit more air. Those are the things you know … disappointing. Yeah, it was just kind of a last opportunity really.”
On the defensive backline
“I think it's early, given the fact that we can change the back to back-five to back- four and interchanging, allowing guys to come in midfield, but saying that ... Caleb (Stanko) has the ability to step in in the midfield and guys drop out. So, it's definitely a work in progress. The more minutes guys get with one another, the more training guys get to know each other's habits, I think the better it will be. And I think Caleb's done a great job since he's come in and filled that role. And Gustavo's (Vallecilla) obviously adapting to a new country and new players and learning English. And there's a lot of a lot of things that are, you can say, that are difficult to adjust to another country and to a new team and a new club. And I think all that is a part. I think it's a learning curve for everybody, the club and on the pitch as well.”

“Well, the start of the game was a little bit tough. The first 15 to 20 minutes we were just defending, but I think after that we came a little bit better in the game. They had some opportunities, and we created some really good opportunities as well. Obviously, in the second half they didn't create an identity, and yeah that's why it's so disappointing that off a set piece we conceded a goal. After that we had some chances, but we couldn't finish it.”
On his performance in the match
“Yeah, my own performance ... of course, I'm a goalie. I'm the last person to try to save the balls, and in the first half it went pretty well. I made some good saves. Not only I did. I think Geoff [Cameron], Joe [Gyau] they cleared a lot of good opportunities from New England (Revolution) as well. I think overall, it was a good team performance. We need to finish our own opportunities as well to win or at least get a draw and keep a point or maybe three at home.”
On how the change in the backline has helped
“I think that's it, for example, against (CF) Montreal we didn't give a lot of opportunities away. Today was a little bit different, especially in the first half. They created a lot of shot opportunities, but the second half we played a little bit different. We put more pressure on them. They didn't create a lot of chances. The only chance they had was the set-piece when they scored. Overall, our second half was a lot better.”
