While FC Cincinnati played their first MLS match since June 6 this past weekend, five Orange and Blue players represented their national teams, too. Here’s a recap of their weekend in the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup.
Darren Mattocks and Alvas Powell
The respective forward and right back both featured in Jamaica’s 0-0 draw with El Salvador on Friday night in Houston, Texas. Powell started and played the full match, while Mattocks came on as a 66th-minute substitute.
Despite the draw, the Reggae Boyz still top Group C, which resumes play Tuesday night to close the group’s play. Jamaica will play third-place Curaçao in Los Angeles at 8 p.m. ET on FS2. With a win, Jamaica could potentially avoid playing the U.S. Men’s National Team in the quarterfinals. (The Jamaicans beat the USMNT in a friendly earlier this month.)
Barring a loss to Curaçao, Jamaica will either play the U.S. or Panama in the next round. Seedings will first depend on the Reggae Boyz, but also the El Salvador match and then Wednesday's games with the U.S. playing Panama.
Emery Welshman
Welshman and Guyana lost 4-2 to Panama on Saturday night in Cleveland. The two goals were the country’s first in a major international tournament.
The Golden Jaguars played in a 4-3-3 formation and used Welshman as a center forward. He picked up a yellow card in the match.
Because of the loss, Guyana will be eliminated from the Gold Cup after Wednesday night’s match against Trinidad and Tobago in Kansas City, Kansas, which will be televised on FS2 at 6:30 p.m. ET.
Allan Cruz and Kendall Waston
The FCC duo and Costa Rica conclude their group stage play on Monday night, when they face Haiti. Both national teams have six points from two matches. Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. ET in Harrison, New Jersey, and the game will be televised on FS1.
If Costa Rica wins, they will play Canada in the quarterfinals. With a loss, the Ticos will play Mexico – one of the tournament favorites – next.
USMNT recap
The Americans pummeled T&T 6-0 in Cleveland Saturday night in their first meeting since the U.S. lost to the Soca Warriors in late 2017 and failed to the qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Leading 1-0 at halftime, the USMNT added a handful more in the second half. Aaron Long became the first center back to score twice in a game for the national team in a tournament, while Gyasi Zardes also had a brace. Paul Arriola and Christian Pulisic scored the other two goals.
The U.S. close Group D play on Wednesday night at 9 p.m. ET on FS1 against Panama, who also have six points from two matches. Panama played in the FIFA World Cup.
