Soccer is back in Cincinnati this week! After two months away from competitive action in Major League Soccer, The Orange and Blue kick off the second half of the season this Wednesday night at TQL Stadium with a showdown against one of the league's best.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup at an end, FC Cincinnati take on Western Conference-leading Vancouver Whitecaps on Wednesday night, kicking things off at 7:30p.m. to help ring in the second half of the Major League Soccer season.
While national teams were competing all summer for international glory, FC Cincinnati have been hard at work at the Mercy Health Training Center in Milford, Ohio, preparing for action. Training was underway almost every day, and sometimes twice a day, since June 22, and the opportunity to focus on themselves meant the coaching staff could spend time grinding out the details of the squad's performance and improving their game.
So, with a half-season of data to build off of, and opportunities to improve on some of the struggles they had through 15 games, The Orange and Blue are looking to come out of the gates strong on Wednesday and see improvements in the areas they focused on most.
“Seeing what the past month looks like in a really important game, as far as being at home, playing against a very good team…I know the guys have put a lot of work in, and I hope that comes out in the best way on Wednesday,” FC Cincinnati Head Coach Pat Noonan said Monday ahead of the match as to what he was looking for most in this match with Vancouver. “I can talk about all the ways that we progressed and all the things that we focused on, but if you don't see that in a good way against a good team, then okay, we're not as far along as we thought.
“So hopefully the performance is strong, and the confidence is where it needs to be, where it should be, to perform on our home field.”
The Orange and Blue played three competitive matches this summer as tuneups for the regular season's resumption, but this test will be the greatest among them – both in the quality of opponent and the stakes. FCC’s matches this summer were two friendlies and an intersquad matchup, and while FC Cincinnati looked quality in all three of those, with victories in both friendlies over Burnley FC and CD Olimpia, Vancouver poses a new kind of challenge.
A further wrinkle to this match, however, is that the visiting Whitecaps have already played a pair of competitive games and were scheduled to resume the MLS season last week. The Whitecaps played two matches in the Canadian Championships in the last two weeks, defeating Calvary FC of the Canadian Premier League 5-2 on aggregate, but their scheduled return to MLS action was postponed after their game with Chicago Fire FC was rescheduled due to air quality concerns.
So both clubs will be playing their first MLS matches when the clubs kick off together on Wednesday night.
“We'll see what it looks like. Anytime you're off from league play for that length of time, there's going to be uncertainty around how sharp you are,” Noonan added on the match and the challenges both sides will be facing. “So while it was nice to go into the break the way we did, that's so far in the past that it's not a part of the conversation. It's the progress that we were looking to see with our training and with these friendlies that we just played and how to to see those things come out and see areas of improvement that we really needed to to get better going into this second half of the season.”
FC Cincinnati embark on a grueling month back from the extended summer break when they kick off on Wednesday night, beginning a stretch of 10 games in just over 30 days to get the soccer season back underway. After this match, FC Cincinnati head north for one of the biggest road matches of the season when they renew the Hell is Real rivalry with Columbus Crew on Saturday night at Scotts Miracle-Gro Field.

History vs Vancouver Whitecaps FC
Vancouver Whitecaps FC are one of just three MLS clubs which FC Cincinnati have never beaten (LAFC, San Diego FC). The Orange and Blue bring an 0-1-2 record into Wednesday night against the ‘Caps. In the last matchup with Vancouver, FC Cincinnati earned a 1-1 draw at BC Place – which was the only time in the three matches the team has met in Canada.
In all three matches, FC Cincinnati scored first. The last time FC Cincinnati lost to Vancouver Whitecaps was in FCC’s inaugural MLS season, falling 2-1 at Nippert Stadium in 2019.

MLS is BACK – FC Cincinnati begin the second half of the 2026 Major League Soccer season Wednesday night against the defending Western Conference Champions Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The Orange and Blue bring a 5-5-5 record into Wednesday approaching the midway point of the 34-match MLS calendar.
High Octane Scoring – FC Cincinnati have scored multiple goals in eight consecutive games, which is the longest streak in the club’s MLS era (2019-present). The Orange and Blue surpassed the prior club record of scoring 2+ goals scored in six consecutive games. FC Cincinnati’s 36 goals in MLS play rank second in MLS (Inter Miami, 39).
A Busy Break! – Following the Orlando City match, FC Cincinnati players were given a break and returned to the Queen City on June 22 where the month-long preparation began for the second half of the season.
FC Cincinnati played and won a pair of friendlies, first beating England’s Burnley FC, 3-1, on July 10 at TQL Stadium followed by a resounding 5-0 win over Honduran club CD Olimpia in a closed-door friendly on July 15.
Center back Miles Robinson represented FC Cincinnati at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming FCC’s first active player to represent the USMNT at a World Cup and second active rostered player at a World Cup (Ronald Matarrita, Costa Rica - 2022).
Scouting Vancouver Whitecaps FC (10-2-2, 32 Points, 1st in the Western Conference, W-L-W-D-D)
As one of the strongest sides in Major League Soccer through the first half of the season, the Vancouver Whitecaps come to TQL Stadium as leaders of the Western Conference and second place in the Supporters’ Shield table. After restarting their competitive action earlier this month in the Canadian Championships, their trip to TQL Stadium will mark the restart of the MLS season for them as well.
Vancouver Whitecaps final game prior to the World Cup stoppage this summer was, like FC Cincinnati’s, a massive high to go out on. On a road trip through Southern California, VWFC took down San Diego FC in a 4-2 thrashing that saw star striker Brian White earn a brace to bring his goal total to a team-high 10 goals on the year. White, a New Jersey native, has led the team in scoring each of the last four seasons and tallied at least 15 goals in each of those full seasons.
Much like how FC Cincinnati are getting Miles Robinson back from World Cup duty, the Whitecaps are getting several players back from duty who will be expected to make their returns to action at the club level. Midfielder Sebastian Berhalter, a teammate of Robinson’s on the USMNT, is back; he leads the club in goal contributions with six goals and seven assists. Andrés Cubas of Paraguay has also returned, and up-and-coming star Rayan Elloumi of Tunisia is also back in the fold.
In all, Vancouver have one of the deepest and most dynamic rosters in the league, and are capable of winning in multiple ways.
“I think how they can play, starting with Takayoka and goal and distribution range of passing has had them able to break teams down in different ways,” FC Cincinnati Head Coach Pat Noonan said of his opponent this week. “It's not always with a short pass. It's with passes over distance. So that's noticeable. I think technical ability, but the way they move with the game is very connected, and some key pieces like every team with Blackmon, with Burhalter, with Mueller, White. I highlight some of those guys because I think the production and the leadership and the way that they connect the game is at a high level, and I think that's brought them a lot of success.”
The engine for this Vancouver team, or at least the central figure, is midfielder and German international superstar Thomas Müller, who joined the club last summer and has been an instant game-changer. Since arriving from Bayern Munich, the club where he made over 500 appearances, the man nicknamed ‘Der Raumdeuter’ (which translates to 'interpreter of space') has appeared in 19 MLS matches and earned 11 goals and seven assists in that time.
But what stands out most is more of what Müller does off the scoresheet for his team than on it.
I've always admired Müller — he’s a winner. When you look at how he plays the game and the success he's had, game understanding, knowing what the team needs from him, and in all phases, he’s just a willing player,” FC Cincinnati Head Coach Pat Noonan said of Müller. “I say willing player: if the attack needs something certain, playing short, he moves to get on the ball; how he connects passes with his teammates when the game has to be more direct. How he's just so effective in how he moves and reads and anticipates play and production.
“He can score with his head. He can score with both feet. He can pass. I don't know how many trophies he's won, but he's won a lot, and I've admired him for a long time, both with the national team with Germany and then with his clubs.”
The Whitecaps are led by Head Coach Jasper Sørensen, who took over the side in 2025 and has helped make them one of the most consistently successful clubs in the league since his arrival. Sørensen, who hails from Denmark and spent his entire coaching career there before coming to Vancouver, has most often deployed his side in a 4-2-3-1 formation.
In goal for Vancouver is Yohei Takaoka, who was named an MLS All-Star in 2025. In 13 starts this season, Takaoka has earned six clean sheets and allowed just nine goals while making 25 saves.
