CHESTER, Pa. – FC Cincinnati fell to the Philadelphia Union, 3-0, at Subaru Park on Wednesday night. While the two sides were scoreless through 45 minutes, the Philadelphia Union (9-3-4, 31 pts.) scored three second-half goals to register all three points at Subaru Park for a fifth consecutive home match.
Ilsinho opened the scoring in the 59th minute shortly after entering the match. The Union’s Alejandro Bedoya and Jack Elliott added goals in the 73rd and 80th minutes, respectively.
FC Cincinnati (3-9-4, 13 pts.) nearly tallied prior to halftime when Joseph-Claude Gyau’s volleyed effort required an acrobatic save from Philadelphia goalkeeper Andre Blake. Zico Bailey and Alvaro Barreal made their FC Cincinnati and MLS debuts in tonight’s match.
FC Cincinnati will begin a five-match homestand on Sunday, Oct. 11 when they will play Toronto FC at Nippert Stadium. “Again, giving the late goals for free, which makes it very hard to win games. If you see how we play, and I must give the team a compliment for the majority of the game, keeping possession and holding possession. Opposition having it very difficult to handle how we play going forward. First half, (Przemysław) Tytoń having a very good save, but still self-creating opportunities as well and getting close to goal. The only thing is very important, to make the right decision in the final third. We don’t score in the second half. You want to keep on continuing doing like this. You still have the opportunities, because they’re still not pressing, so they give us time on the ball. Only thing is that we need to make the right choices in playing it. First goal, it happens because the cross, it goes clear and they bring it back out to the box. Then number 11 (Ilsinho) is totally free to hit it. Then the deflection and it goes in. I think the second goal we give it away ourselves, and the third one as well. I don’t know if the second or the third one is a set-piece, but we can never allow that to fall in. So, I am happy with how we played the majority of the time. After three-nil, it’s difficult, and then the opposition gets a bit of the ball. It looks like they're playing, but it already happened because we were debating on the goals that we conceded ourselves. And if you want to, if you want to get results, if you want to get points or if you want to get three points, you need to take your opportunities. You don't need to give away opportunities like that, so the opposition can score from that. So, all in all, in a way you can say yeah, good having a lot of possession going forward at times as well. Not decisive enough and defensively and conceding goals. We need to do that better. And it's not only the defenders it's a whole team that needs to work hard to do that.
On how disappointing it is to concede via a deflection
“No, it's very disappointing. But that's, that's the moment that we are in now, and we need to mark the guy on the edge of the box better as well so he cannot have a shot free. And we need to have a look back at the situation. But that's the situation you don't want to create for yourself, to have the opponent for you on the edge of the box where you can have a shot. And then, of course, the ball goes in by a deflection and that makes it harsh as well. You know, but that's in a situation where we're in now. And I think sometimes by getting out there you need to give everything. You need to try to avoid situations like that. And that makes it hard after, like you're saying, an hour of working hard, having good football as well. And then you go down again, then you need to get back into the game. That’s at times what makes it more difficult as well.
On Zico Bailey’s performance
“Well, I think it's very good of Zico (Bailey), but he deserved it as well. It's not that we bring them in to see or how he was going to respond because in the training session Zico has done very well. As always, you need to wait and he needs to wait for the right moment to happen so that we can use him. Greg (Garza) came up with an injury and we could have brought somebody else in as well but Zico has done very well since he's been with the first team in the training sessions. He can handle that situation and I think if you look at him how he played the game and how he managed himself, I think he's done very well.”

“Yes, it was. It was very physical. It’s playing against men now, it's no more against kids my age. So, the level was definitely high.”
On the instruction he received prior to entering the match
“It was just ‘be confident.’ We've been training for stuff like this the whole season and it was mostly just the confidence. They know I have quality, so just go out and work my best.”

“Of course, not the result we want. I think first off, we played really well -- created some opportunities and chances. We had a good possession game, we controlled the game, I think we press really good. They didn't know what to do when they had the ball. So, we did everything pretty well. And then after the first goal we get against, it didn't work out pretty well for us. But we kept fighting, I think. And then the second goal came and then yeah, it was over. I don't know. The difference between the first half and the second half is too big.”
On if it was disappointing on how the first goal was scored
“Well, it's part of the game. Especially when you're on the bottom of the table. The hits you get, they come faster and harder. Especially with this moment. A goal like this, I think when you're leading, when you're on the top of the table, you don't concede these goals. It's really unlucky. But, that's how it works and that's how it is. If you get a goal against you have to go again and keep going. We tried and yeah, it didn't work out.”
On the performance of Zico Bailey
“I'm really happy for Zico. His first minutes in the team, in the League which is something to be proud of as a player and as a person. I'm happy for him and he did pretty well. He played a good game and he showed he's ready. He's ready for the team.”
On if results affect the team’s commitment to its current style of play
“The system is working fine. Like I said, we did really good in the first half, in the first hour, maybe. The press was good, we took a lot of balls, we won duels, the opponent didn't know what to do. When you get a goal against like that it’s like ‘Okay, shit, there we go again.’ Sorry for my words, but that’s how it is. I think the first really good chance they had was the two-nil. He scores, it’s a good shot and it goes in. One chance, one goal and you’re two-nil behind. That’s what makes it hard for your mentality, but the fight in the team and the way we play in press is good and is still good. Of course, it’s disappointing when you lose three-nil on the road against a team. Okay, they won, I respect that. But, it’s not a really good team. I think we are better and we can do better.”
