Takeaways from New England

After winning two straight matches, FC Cincinnati followed up with consecutive losses, with the most recent one being a 2-0 defeat to the New England Revolution on Sunday night at Nippert Stadium.

Here are takeaways from the match:

FCC lacked scoring opportunities

The home side’s best chance to score game in the 76th minute when Fanendo Adi headed a cross from Frankie Amaya on target but it was tipped over by New England goalkeeper Matt Turner.

Amaya also had a good chance in the 57th minute when he volleyed a first-time shot at goal, but Turner saved that as well.

Other than those attempts, Cincinnati was unable beat the Revolution backline, which prevented the Orange and Blue from taking a shot on goal until Allan Cruz in the 38th minute.

Even though clear-cut chances were limited, it’s worth noting FC Cincinnati had several strikers available for the match for the first time this season.

While Rashawn Dally has been the starter, Adi replaced him to make his first MLS start since June 6 at New York City FC. Additionally, Darren Mattocks was a second half sub and played for the first time since June 1 at the Colorado Rapids.

Mattocks had missed time on international duty with Jamaica in the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup. Following the tournament, he went to Jamaica for a personal matter.

Spencer Richey impressed (once again)

The Revolution entered the match having only lost once since May 11. Their play reiterated that Sunday night when they patiently defended and created attacking opportunities in waves.

Richey deserves some credit for keeping the visitors at bay.

He finished the match with five saves, which is only one off his career-high six saves he had two weeks ago at the Chicago Fire and May 1 at the Philadelphia Union.

His best moment came in the 41st minute when he stopped a knuckling shot from Teal Bunbury. Richey pawed the ball over the cross bar and out for a corner kick, which left supporters in The Bailey applauding behind him.

What comes next

Following the loss, Cincinnati returns to action next Saturday night when they play at Toronto FC. The matchup is the first this season between the sides and marks FCC’s first visit to Canada as an MLS club.

Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
