Although FC Cincinnati won’t move into the West End until 2021, the club is already making an impact in the community. On Monday, the team helped renovate a playground; on Tuesday, the club and People Working Cooperatively partnered to help renovate two homes in the neighborhood for elderly homeowners.
Roughly 30 people – including volunteers, club employees, players and PWC staff – helped repaint doors, weed gardens, repave a sidewalk and build a hand railing.
“It’s always nice to give back from the blessing that you have,” club captain Kendall Waston said. “I feel really blessed to be here and try to help however I can with this nice charity care.”
The renovations were part of MLS WORKS Greener Goals Week of Service. The week will conclude with the Orange and Blue hosting Real Salt Lake on Friday night at Nippert Stadium wearing special adidas x Parley uniforms.
People Working Cooperatively is a local organization that provides thousands of low-income, elderly and disabled home owners with an improved living standard, including offering critical home repairs, energy conservation and weatherization, mobility modifications, and maintenance services.
“It’s not only about what you do on the field,” Waston said. “It’s about the best you can do off the field. You contribute, as well, with your community. For me, that is the best I can do.”
Waston was joined by FC Cincinnati teammates Caleb Stanko and Forrest Lasso.
“It’s huge,” Lasso said regarding the importance of giving back. “In life, you have to be extremely fortunate for where you are and you’ve got to understand that everyone’s lives are different. If you do something small for someone, it’s a huge step.”
